AAMEEN.Monday, December 9, 2013 HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday met the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak, in Bandar Seri Begawan for the 17th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Brunei and Malaysia. The consultation was held in a warm and productive atmosphere, signifying the close and excellent relationship between both sides, according to a joint statement released by Brunei’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Reiterating the significance of the Exchange of Letters inked by the heads of Brunei and Malaysia on March 16, 2009, both sides reviewed with satisfaction the progress made in its implementation, aimed at resolving outstanding issues between both sides. The leaders continued to express satisfaction with the progress made by the both countries in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the Commercial Arrangement Area (CAA), established following the Exchange of Letters two years ago. [Related story: Temburong residents celebrate Friendship Bridge opening] [Related video: Brunei to Sarawak bridge opens] His Majesty and Prime Minister Najib welcomed the signing of the Heads of Agreement for Gumusut/Kakap and Geronggong/Jagus-East Fields to set up a joint development based on a provisional production and cost sharing. They also welcomed the signing of the Heads of Agreement for Kinabalu West NAG and Maharajalela North Fields to formalise the unitisation arrangement and way forward on these straddling fields. However, no further details were given in the joint declaration. The leaders also recalled their instructions at the 16th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Brunei and Malaysia to increase cooperation in Blocks N and Q, downstream industries, Sabah and Sarawak, and in third countries. In this regard, the two heads of states expressed satisfaction at the signing of the Production Sharing Agreements for Blocks N and Q for the immediate commencement of exploration work between PetroleumBRUNEI and PETRONAS. They were also pleased with the agreements between PetroleumBRUNEI and PETRONAS in relation to the acquisition of a participating interest of the North Montney assets of Progress Energy Cooperation Ltd and in the Pacific Northwest shale gas to LNG Project in Canada. Both leaders welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between PB Services Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of PetroleumBRUNEI, with Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) to enter into a possible joint venture in Brunei to provide fabrication services in the oil and gas industry. His Majesty and Prime Minister Najib commended the excellent work of the joint technical teams in the joint demarcation and survey of the land boundary between Brunei and Malaysia, and looked forward to the official commencement of the land demarcation as soon as possible. They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly with the states of Sabah and Sarawak. Both leaders encouraged their officials to explore new economic opportunities on a commercial basis. Expressing satisfaction with the significant progress in implementing the Exchange of Letters, the leaders urged that efforts be intensified to enable the conclusion of other outstanding elements as well as issues that are being deliberated by both sides. The leaders were also pleased to officially launch the Friendship Bridge yesterday linking Temburong, Brunei, to Sarawak, Malaysia. They remarked the bridge reflects the deep and enduring ties between the two countries. Their Majesties received in audience Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak and Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor in a ceremony at the Cheradi Laila Kenchana, Istana Nurul Iman. Also in attendance were Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, along with the Malaysian delegation including Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Anifah Hj Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, other ministers and diplomats as well as their spouses. Both leaders and the Crown Prince then witnessed two signing ceremonies also held at Istana Nurul Iman. A memorandum of understanding between the Government of His Majesty and Government of Malaysia on “Cooperation in the Development of the Cooperative Sector” was inked in a ceremony at the Baitul Masyuarah. Signing for Brunei was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, while Yang Berhormat Dato’ Hassan Malek, Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-Operative and Consumerism, represented Malaysia. The “Joint Announcement Between PetroleumBRUNEI and Petronas” was then inked by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who is also the Chairman of PetroleumBRUNEI Sdn Bhd, on behalf of Brunei. Malaysia was represented at the signing ceremony by Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Petronas. However, no further details regarding the signing ceremonies were given in the press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei. Their Majesties then hosted a banquet at the Istana Nurul Iman’s Baitur Rahmah for Prime Minister Najib and his spouse.
