Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abdul Rahman said the $48,145,113 school was part of 10th National Development Plan.
He said the Rimba Arabic School – which will only be for male students and has a capacity of 2,000 students – is expected to be completed by June 2016.
The building project commenced in September 2014.
The design of the building is in accordance with Islamic concept.
It will be equipped with various facilities – such as classrooms, staff rooms, science labs, mini studio, cafeteria and a boarding house – to match the needs of teaching and learning.
“It is hoped that with the construction of this new building, it will be able to open opportunities for more students to be qualified to join Arabic schools in the country... so that the future needs for the development of the country and the spread of the religion can be met,” said the minister.
He added that HRH’s attendance at the event was a continuation of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien’s legacy, when he laid the foundation of the Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Boys Secondary School on September 24, 1964.
He said that when the school opened in 1966, it only had 46 students.
The number, however, has been on the rise. It experienced a 29 per cent annual increase over the past five years.
He added that the current building can no longer accommodate any further increase in the number of students.
The ministry said the total number of male students joining Arabic schools in the nation was at a record high of 368 this year.
At the site close to Giant Rimba, a video on the building project of the school was shown, before a special prayer was read to bless the ceremony and the new school.
After laying the foundation, HRH also visited an exhibition on the new school and signed the foundation-laying parchment.
“InsyAllah this school will breed Islamic scholars and intellectuals who are knowledgeable and competent in various disciplines in the hope of achieving Wawasan 2035, while also reinforcing the national idea of becoming a Zikir Nation and a Nation of Malay Muslim Monarchy,” said the minister.
