HM reminds Bruneians to unite as country implements Syariah law and tells the world:
HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has a message for those outside of Brunei: Respect us as we have respected you.
The monarch stated this in a titah (royal speech) at the opening ceremony for the first meeting of the 10th Session of the Legislative Council Meeting yesterday, where he referred to the new Syariah Penal Code as a national project.
In the titah, His Majesty spoke of unity in the context of the implementation of Syariah law.
“The implementation of the laws is yet another major development for the country and not what some claim as archaic and a backward step,” the monarch said.
“This is the time for us Bruneians to show our unity for unity is the pillar and the natural source of all strength,” His Majesty said.
“Do not pay any attention to what others say about us here in Brunei because they do not know the way we know what it is to be Bruneian and how it is in Brunei.
“What is important is that we ourselves as Bruneians must truly be Bruneian, united as one regardless of ethnicity, race or religion.
“Be a nation as how a Bruneian would, a government as how Bruneians are governed, a monarchy or lead as how a Bruneian can lead, with undivided loyalty and total devotion,” said His Majesty.
The monarch touched on the welfare of citizens and recalled that in January this year, quite a number of Bruneians were badly affected by the harsh weather conditions. “As a spontaneous response, my government immediately allocated a budget of $68 million specifically to overcome flooding in the affected areas.
“On top of that, another $35 million was set aside to cover renovations and repairs to the public infrastructure and government assets damaged as a result of the landslides and floods.”
His Majesty announced that he has consented to the 10th National Development Plan Executive Committee’s recommendation for an extra $1.65 billion to be added to the annual budget allocation of $6.5 billion to finance new projects applied for by the government ministries and departments.
His Majesty also briefly touched on strengthening and increasing economic activities including efforts to attract foreign direct investments.
In this aspect, His Majesty commended the initiative of the Ministry of Education as well as other agencies to raise the level of business literacy among the youth and students by incorporating entrepreneurship in the education curriculum. “It is about time our country produced successful businesses/businessmen, entrepreneurs among the people,” said His Majesty.
