    FOLLOWING the opening of the historic Friendship Bridge between Temburong-Sarawak yesterday, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam together with Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha last night held an audience for the Prime Minister of Malaysia and his spouse.

    Their Majesties received in audience Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak and Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor in a ceremony at the Cheradi Laila Kenchana, Istana Nurul Iman.

    Present were His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik and Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah.

    Also in attendance were Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, along with the Malaysian delegation including Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Anifah Hj Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, other ministers and diplomats as well as their spouses.

    Prior to the audience ceremony, His Majesty held a four-eyed meeting with Prime Minister Najib at another room in the palace known as the Cheradi Ratna Kenchana. Both leaders and the Crown Prince then witnessed two signing ceremonies also held at Istana Nurul Iman.

    A memorandum of understanding between the Government of His Majesty and Government of Malaysia on “Cooperation in the Development of the Cooperative Sector” was inked in a ceremony at the Baitul Masyuarah.

    Signing for Brunei was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, while Yang Berhormat Dato’ Hassan Malek, Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-Operative and Consumerism, represented Malaysia.

    The “Joint Announcement Between PetroleumBRUNEI and Petronas” was then inked by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who is also the Chairman of PetroleumBRUNEI Sdn Bhd, on behalf of Brunei.

    Malaysia was represented at the signing ceremony by Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Petronas. However, no further details regarding the signing ceremonies were given in the press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei.

    Their Majesties then hosted a banquet at the Istana Nurul Iman’s Baitur Rahmah for Prime Minister Najib and his spouse. Joining them were the Crown Prince as well as other members of the Royal Family. Prime Minister Najib and his delegation were scheduled to leave Brunei afterwards.

        HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah (pic), the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo, Japan today to attend the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit. The summit is being held to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Relation and is to run from December 13 to 15. The itinerary for His Majesty lists down a one-on-one meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe followed by two joint press conferences with the Japanese Prime Minister among the earlier scheduled appointments.

         HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday met the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak, in Bandar Seri Begawan for the 17th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Brunei and Malaysia.

        The consultation was held in a warm and productive atmosphere, signifying the close and excellent relationship between both sides, according to a joint statement released by Brunei’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

        Both leaders welcomed the good progress in bilateral relations since the last consultation on September 4, 2012, reaffirming their commitment to deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in areas of common interests.

        Reiterating the significance of the Exchange of Letters inked by the heads of Brunei and Malaysia on March 16, 2009, both sides reviewed with satisfaction the progress made in its implementation, aimed at resolving outstanding issues between both sides.

        The leaders continued to express satisfaction with the progress made by the both countries in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the Commercial Arrangement Area (CAA), established following the Exchange of Letters two years ago.

        His Majesty and Prime Minister Najib welcomed the signing of the Heads of Agreement for Gumusut/Kakap and Geronggong/Jagus-East Fields to set up a joint development based on a provisional production and cost sharing.

        They also welcomed the signing of the Heads of Agreement for Kinabalu West NAG and Maharajalela North Fields to formalise the unitisation arrangement and way forward on these straddling fields. However, no further details were given in the joint declaration.

        The leaders also recalled their instructions at the 16th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Brunei and Malaysia to increase cooperation in Blocks N and Q, downstream industries, Sabah and Sarawak, and in third countries.

        In this regard, the two heads of states expressed satisfaction at the signing of the Production Sharing Agreements for Blocks N and Q for the immediate commencement of exploration work between PetroleumBRUNEI and PETRONAS.

        They were also pleased with the agreements between PetroleumBRUNEI and PETRONAS in relation to the acquisition of a participating interest of the North Montney assets of Progress Energy Cooperation Ltd and in the Pacific Northwest shale gas to LNG Project in Canada.

        Both leaders welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between PB Services Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of PetroleumBRUNEI, with Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) to enter into a possible joint venture in Brunei to provide fabrication services in the oil and gas industry.

        His Majesty and Prime Minister Najib commended the excellent work of the joint technical teams in the joint demarcation and survey of the land boundary between Brunei and Malaysia, and looked forward to the official commencement of the land demarcation as soon as possible.

        They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly with the states of Sabah and Sarawak. Both leaders encouraged their officials to explore new economic opportunities on a commercial basis.

        Expressing satisfaction with the significant progress in implementing the Exchange of Letters, the leaders urged that efforts be intensified to enable the conclusion of other outstanding elements as well as issues that are being deliberated by both sides.

        The leaders were also pleased to officially launch the Friendship Bridge yesterday linking Temburong, Brunei, to Sarawak, Malaysia. They remarked the bridge reflects the deep and enduring ties between the two countries.

        They also looked forward to the signing of the Agreement on the Management Maintenance and Usage of the Bridge Spanning the Pandaruan River.

         DECADES of waiting finally ended for tens of thousands of residents living on either side of Sungai Pandaruan, after leaders from Brunei and Malaysia yesterday inaugurated the “Friendship Bridge” which crosses the Sarawak-Brunei riverine border.

        The ceremony was a jovial one as government ministers, grassroots leaders and residents from both countries turned up to witness His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak launch the 189-metre long, 14-metre wide link.

        His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, was among those accompanying the heads of state.

        The monarch and the Malaysian premier — who was in Brunei to attend an annual consultation between the leaders of the two countries — arrived together in Bangar town of Temburong District, before being personally driven by His Majesty, accompanied by a motorcade, to the bridge, located minutes away.

        The leaders – seen sharing lively conversation and laughs throughout the event — were greeted by the Communications Minister of Brunei, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar and the Works Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Hj Fadillah Hj Yusof and other officials.

        To inaugurate the bridge, the leaders signed a plaque and cut a ribbon placed along the bridge’s centre, marking the boundary of Sarawak and Brunei at Sungai Pandaruan. They then watched as the first five Brunei- and Malaysia-registered vehicles, carrying passengers waving both country’s flags, crossed to either side of the bridge.

        After a doa selamat was read by Brunei’s State Mufti YB Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abdul Aziz Juned, the leaders were briefed on the bridge’s inception.

        It was previously reported that about 2.1 million people pass through the Kuala Lurah and Tedungan checkpoints annually, with an estimated 80 per cent of that traffic utilising the ferry – which has the capacity to bring 10 cars per trip across the river. Accounts of travellers having to endure queues lasting up to five hours long, particularly during the school holidays, were common.

        Opened to traffic that afternoon, the RM20.8 million (about $9 million) bridge now cuts the crossing time to just minutes. The two sides shared the costs of the construction evenly and have agreed that the bridge will remain toll-free.

        Speaking to The Brunei Times, the Sultanate’s national coordinator for the project and co-resource person for yesterday’s ceremony, Senior Special Duties Officers of the Ministry of Communications Hj Rozaly Hj Saidon outlined the timeline of the bridge’s inception.

        Following a “kick-off” discussion between officials of both sides, a joint project team (JPT) was set up to mesh out the technical, policy and other “important requirements for the mutual benefit of both countries”.

        From the JPT, a bridge management committee (BMC) was then appointed to discuss the project at the working level.

        The two governments signed the agreement on the bridge’s construction on September 12, 2011, while a ceremony to officiate the construction site took place the following day.

        Work on the bridge started on May 15, 2012, with a Malaysian contractor appointed following tenders put out by both governments for its construction.

        The bridge was “fully completed” at the end of November this year, according to the Communications Ministry.

        “We (officials from Brunei and Malaysia) worked together… in trying to fulfil the requirements of both countries in coming up with the bridge,” said Hj Rozaly.

        “I must say the cooperation between both countries is excellent. We have very good working relations. We work together in harmony (in) all our discussions and meetings, both in Kuala Lumpur and Brunei,” he said, adding both the BMC and JPT made “clear decisions” in the bridge’s construction. “I wish to put on record how proud Malaysia is on the opening of the Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Friendship Bridge today. This is the first bridge to be built jointly by the two countries and it is also a reflection of the close relationship between the two countries,” Dato Najib told Malaysian reporters yesterday.
