RESIDENTS have been encouraged to take part in the 68th birthday celebrations of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, however, they should not neglect their obligations while doing so.
Celebrating the monarch’s birthday is a national agenda and one of the ways to strengthen the Sultanate’s system of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), imams said in the Friday sermon yesterday.
Citizens should instil patriotic sentiment in the heart by remembering the good that His Majesty has done for the peace and harmony of the country.
“For us in Brunei, the meaning of monarchy is in line with the meaning of caliph, namely continuing the leadership of Nabawi based on Al-Quran, hadith and ij’ma (consensus of the Muslim community),” the imams said.
The word sultan brings the meaning of the enforcer of peace and harmony who rules in accordance with Allah SWT’s guidance and teachings. The position of a sultan is similar to that of ulama (scholar) who is also the leader and the role model for the people of his country, the imams said.
In this regard, the imams stressed the importance of educating the young generation to love and respect His Majesty from an early age, by supplicating for the well-being of the monarch and the Royal Family. Imams also advised the public to take precautionary measures in maintaining the peace and harmony for families, race and the nation.
“The peace and harmony that is mentioned here is true happiness that is free from fear to be able to enjoy the life of long lasting stability,” the imams said.
At the same time, organisers were reminded that entertainment during the festive season be in line with what is allowed in Islam.
Meanwhile, civil servants were urged to ensure that their participation in the celebration did not affect their work while parents should not neglect their obligation towards their families.
