JOHOR is all set to formally crown its ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ismail at Istana Besar today.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha are expected to attend the coronation ceremony.
Their Majesties will join Malaysia’s state rulers, governors, and the prime ministers of Malaysia and Singapore.
The coronation will be the first in over 55 years since the coronation of the late Sultan Ismail (1959-1981) on February 10, 1960.
The Sultan of Johor Darul Ta’zim will be crowned more than four years after he was proclaimed Sultan of Johor on January 2010 following the demise of his father, Sultan Iskandar Al-haj Ismail.
During a briefing to the media, Mohammad Danny Aimi, education attache at the Brunei High Commission in Malaysia said over 20,500 Johor residents will be taking part in the coronation celebrations.
The 900m road pavement at Jalan Wong Ah Fook will be filled with people performing the zapin (traditional Malay dance), silat, dragon and lion dances as well as drum beating.
Legoland mascots and over 2,000 students are also expected to wave the Johor flag.
Every corner of the city has been decked with blue, red and white — the colours of Johor’s flag.
Johor’s skyscrapers, commercial centres and government buildings were also adorned with dozens of small and big Royal blue billboards imprinted with “Daulat Tuanku”.
Tourists could also be seen taking pictures of a giant replica of a crown near the entrance of Istana Bukit Serene where the Sultan resides. The crown is perched on an arch resembling elephant tusks.
Meanwhile, State Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said other activities that have been lined up include a decorated boat parade, fireworks and sports carnival.
