HER Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah presented tenderfoot badges to more than 200 new members of the Brunei Darussalam Girl Guides Association (PPPBD) association in a ceremony yesterday.
The new members of PPPBD comprised 100 girl guides and ranger guides, 98 brownies and five young leaders.
During the event, pre-warrant and warrant cards were also presented to 11 young and adult leaders. The warrant cards can be used by adult members as a licence to run their own units at schools, colleges and other communities, while the pre-warrant cards require a girl guide to become a brownie guider before receiving a warrant.
Pledges of allegiance also took place for the girl guides and brownies.
Held at the National Indoor Stadium, the ceremony also saw the presentation of the council appointment letter to executive committee, elected members and appointed representatives of the association for the period of 2014-2016.
Prior to the recognition to the new members, each of them was required to pass the tenderfoot test after their three-month membership. The tenderfoot test is conducted by training commissioner or co-representative with the unit leader of ranger guides, girl guides and brownies following each of the training programme.
The tenderfoot badge is the main criteria for members of the association to participate in the activities carried out by the PPPBD and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and subsequently to accomplish each training programmes at the higher levels.
In her remarks, Chief Commissioner of PPPBD Hjh Siti Hafsah Hj Abdul Halim said that the appointment of five Youth Leaders for the Executive Committee for the period of 2014-2016 is the continuity of the succession planning in the PPPBD which was prepared during the Progress Report Visit of the Asia Pacific Region of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in 2009 and 2013. “InsyaAllah, this year PPPBD will renew its strategic plan and revise its existing plan of action,’” said Hjh Siti Hafsah.
She expressed hope that all PPPBD commissioners will be able to carry out their own tasks according to the guidelines. When carrying each task, she added, it should not only solely depend on the guidelines but also cover voluntary work which leads to the association’s motto of “Be Prepared and Lend A Hand.”
Since 30 years ago, there are 9,500 registered members who have received the membership badges. Last year alone, there are a total of 1,800 registered members. - Sally Piri
